Cable and Wireless

I had a lot of involvement with Cable and Wireless over a number of years, and we certainly supplied loads of kit.  My earliest contact was in Aden in 1958; I was in the Royal Air Force, and we regularly (unofficially) helped each other out with spares etc.  Later I returned to Aden with Marconi (1961-62), working for the Air Force, but again lots of informal contact with C & W, as they were building next door to us.  In early 1963 I was “sold” to C & W Hong Kong to build an HF transmitting station;  my stay in Nigeria (1965) was building for Nigerian External Telecommunications, at that time I think about 50% owned by C & W. 

From early 1966 I was again “sold” to C & W to build the first stage down link for the NASA Apollo programme in Bermuda - the pic is the completed installation and there is a film of the build on Ascension Island available here in three segments 1.  2.  3.

In 1967 I worked for C & W again, this time on the thin line tropo link from Jamaica to the Cayman Islands.  My contact after that was limited, but Marconi continued to supply kit, notably lots of Satellite Ground Stations, throughout the world.
