Foreword

Taken from the 1968 Marconi Catalogue.

Line Communications Division was created in 1956 to direct the Company's expertise in digital techniques towards certain problems that had arisen in telegraph and telephone communications.  It was clear that new transmission techniques and a greater degree of automation were needed to keep abreast of the tremendous growth in telecommunications traffic.

In the short time since its formation, the Division has made a breakthrough by winning large contracts from the British Post Office for pulse code modulation equipment.  The Division has also won contracts for an automated message switching system, MARS, and is nearing completion of an electronic teleprinter which will go into production this year.

It had, of course, taken on responsibility for the further development and marketing of the Company's well-established digital communications equipment - such as Marconidata, Autoplex and Autospec, all of which have successful sales histories.

Line Communications Division keeps in close touch with markets and trends in relation to technical developments and canthus be sure that its development and production effort is directed towards fulfilling the greatest user needs with equipments that incorporate the most advanced techniques.

The following year, in 1969, saw an increase in focus on telegraph transmission systems and multiplex carrier equipment.  An introduction to these new products, and others, is available here and here.
