Receivers - Introduction

The early years

The first recording of a receiver designed by Marconi was in 1896 at which time a patent for its design was raised.  Its circuit, from Wikipedia, is shown below.

Then followed an evolution of models up to and including the first world war.  Refer here for details.

Marconi Receiver and Measuring Instruments catalogue c. 1914 available here.

After WW1 in 1918 the Marconi Company began producing domestic receivers at the Marconi Scientific Instrument Company.  In 1922 Marconi formed the "Marconiphone" department to design, manufacture and sell domestic receiving equipment before making it a formal subsidiary in late 1923.  Some Marconiphone Company sets were made by STC but all the design and research remained with Marconi at New Street.  The 1925 Marconiphone catalogue can be viewed here.

In 1929 the Marconiphone Company was sold to the Gramophone Company and the Marconi Company never re-entered the domestic receiver market.

However Marconi continually designed and manufactured receivers for the commercial and industrial markets until the late 1990s.

Eddystone Radio

The Marconi Company was a major customer of Eddystone Receivers and, in 1965, decided to purchase it.  A brief history of Eddystone Radio, written by Graeme Wormald (G3GGL), is available here.  This has been taken from the official Eddystone User Group Web Site, with their permission, and can be accessed here.

A full listing of the Eddystone Receiver products and accessories is available here.
