Marconi and the USAF

Introduction

In the 1950s the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company (hereafter referred to as the Marconi Company) was awarded a contract for the supply of microwave communications equipment and services to the United States Air Force (USAF). This contract was worth many of millions of pounds, a great deal at the time.  The greatest majority of it was to be installed in the United Kingdom but with one station in France which would connect into other European networks.

The contract included the system network design, procurement and manufacture, installation and commissioning on site, and training for subsequent maintenance by USAF personnel.

The project office was in Broomfield Road, between Duke and Railway Streets, Chelmsford.  From memory there were 10 or so full time staff.
